Let's go over High Efficiency
Water  Heaters & Boilers
We receive calls everyday regarding new installations, repairs
or replacements of water heaters, or boilers, by both
residential and commercial clients. To be able to give the
BEST
direction and recommendations, to our customers, we need to
be
EXPERTS on the subject. After reviewing this page feel free
to give us a call and we'll be there to answer any questions
you have about your Hot Water System needs.
Types of High Efficiency Water Heaters
1.  Storage (Tank) Water Heaters:  These types have a insulated storage tank which allows the water
inside to stay constantly hot. The fuel that is used to maintain the hot water can be electrical, natural gas,
propane, fuel oil or solar. The problem with these types of water heaters is that to maintain a constant
temperature of the water "standby loss" occurs. Your using your fuel mechanism regardless of whether you
need hot water at the time or not.

2. Demand (Tankless) Water Heaters: These types have heating coils within them that heat the
water as it circulates through those coils. The plus, in this, is that you only heat water when you need it
(on-demand) and avoid "standby" loss. The minus is there are a limited number of sinks, showers, bathtubs,
etc.. that a system like this can handle at one time. The fuel mechanism for these are natural gas, propane and
electricity.

3. Tankless Coil and Indirect Water Heaters: Much like its cousin the Demand (Tankless) Water
Heater, this type uses a coil (heat exchanger) installed in an already in place boiler or furnace. The water flows
through, on demand, the coil to heat. This is a good option for areas in cold climates that furnace and boiler
usage is high.

4. Solar Water Heaters: As the name suggests, water is heated through coils in solar panels. This is very
efficient in that fuel is from the sun and thus free. The negatives are these types of water heater configurations
are generally far more expensive than their counterparts but also you would need a conventional water heater
connected to the system to insure hot water during times such as night or when weather prevents the sun
from giving sufficient rays to the collectors.

5. Heat Pump Water Heaters: These types have a pump that pulls the air, from a fixed location, and
uses its current heat for the water located in a tank. The draw back on this type is that they are only viable in
warm climate areas.

New in the spot light are the Hybrid Hot Water Heaters and the Gas Condensate Hot Water Heaters.
Lets review both technologies to help discern which might be best for you.

Hybrid Hot Water Heaters: In short, these types of water heaters utilize the benefits of Demand (Tankless)
Water Heaters but also have a small reserve tank. This tank is there to give additional hot water, at a given
time, than a pure tankless system could handle (example: multiple showers operating at once). Although this is
a simplified explanation of the technology, to better understand how it works, click on the YouTube link below

GE's new Hybrid, due out in the Fall of 2009. Keep note though, there are other manufactures
that produce high quality hybrids like
Eternal, and A.O. Smith, just to name a couple, as well
Gas Condensate Hot Water Heaters: In affect they are designed much like the conventional Gas Water
Heater except the exhaust venting is now coiled around the water tank adding additional water heating
capability from the exhaust. With this an approximate 30% energy savings is realized.

Take a look at what the US Government has to offer. But it doesn't stop there, Colorado has many
incentives for Efficiency Installations as well.

For a comprehensive listing of incentives for High Efficiency please see the DOE's (Department of Energy)
"Financial Opportunities by Audience"
webpage. This site is very, very informative (a must read).
